🥘 Waffles Ingredients

This ingredient list is completely made up of pantry staples! Make sure you have any toppings you like as well!

  • Eggs - 2 large eggs.
  • Flour - 2 cups of all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour).
  • Milk - 1¾ cups of milk or buttermilk.

🔪 How To Make Homemade Waffles

These waffles are wonderfully easy to make! Just grab a waffle iron, mixing bowl, and a whisk, and you are ready to begin!

This recipe will make about 6 waffles, but this amount could vary based on how large your waffle iron is. The waffle batter can easily be doubled to feed a crowd too.

  1. Whisk the eggs. Add your 2 large eggs into a large bowl and then whisk them until light and fluffy (*see note).
  2. Stir in ingredients. In the same bowl, add your 2 cups of flour, 1¾cups of milk, and ½ cup of oil (or butter) and stir to combine.
  3. Mix the batter. Next, stir in 2 tablespoons of sugar(or syrup), 4 teaspoons of baking powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and the optional ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, if using. Mix the batter until it is just combined, do not over-mix it.

Rest The Waffle Batter For Best Waffles

  1. Let the batter rest. Cover the batter and allow it torest for 30 minutesbefore cooking your waffles. It can also be refrigerated at this point for another day.*Remember to start preheating your waffle iron about 5 minutes before you're ready to make a fantastic waffle breakfast.*
  2. Make the waffles. Once your waffle iron is fully heated, spray it with some nonstick cooking spray. Pour the batter into the waffle iron and cook until the waffles have turned a golden-brown color (*see note). This could take about 3-5 minutes, depending on your waffle iron.
  3. Repeat and serve. Repeat with the remaining batter and serve immediately.

There are so many different ways to enjoy these tasty waffles! Top them with some homemade whipped cream and syrup, or serve them alongside some delicious scrambled eggs! Enjoy!

📖 Variations

This recipe is delicious just the way it is. However, it also works wonderfully as a base recipe for any customizations or additions you like! Here are a few of my favorite variations.

Apple Cinnamon Waffles

To make some warm and delicious apple cinnamon waffles, you'll want to add in 1 cup of apple sauce and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon into your batter.

Additionally, you'll need to add a couple of tablespoons extra of flour to account for the liquid in the applesauce. Enjoy!

Banana Nut Waffles

For some mouthwatering banana nut waffles, use a food processor to mix up 2 ripe bananas and 8 ounces of walnuts. Add this paste to your waffle batter.

Additionally, if you like the texture of the nuts, you can simply chop them up and add them into the batter as is, without blending them with the banana.

Chocolate Waffles

For some decadent chocolate waffles, you only need to make one simple addition to this recipe! Just add in 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder and you are ready to go!

Mix-Ins

If you love the natural flavor of waffles and just want to add a little something extra, try adding some mix-ins! Simply add them to your waffle batter and that's it! The possibilities are endless, but here are some of my favorites!

  • Chocolate Chips
  • Blueberries
  • Nuts
  • Cooked, Crumbled Sausage
  • Cooked, Crumbled Bacon
  • Lemon Zest
  • Sliced Bananas

💭 Tips & Notes

  • For an extra delicious flavor, I love to swap out the sugar for maple syrup! It tastes so good, especially if I'm serving the waffles with syrup!
  • The more you beat your eggs, the lighter and fluffier your waffles will be! I like to separate the egg whites, beat them until fluffy, and then fold them into the batter with the yolks.
  • Let the waffle batter rest for 30 minutes for the BEST WAFFLES. Skipping this time results in chewy waffles that are not as great as they could be.
  • One great way to know that your waffles are done (without having to open the waffle iron) is to wait until it quits shooting out steam!
  • You can easily make this batter in advance for an easy breakfast the next day! Simply make the batter the night before and store it in the fridge. In the morning, give it a quick whisk before pouring it into the heated waffle iron.

🥡 Storing

You can store uncooked batter, covered, in the fridge for an easy breakfast the next day!

Additionally, you can wrap any leftover waffles in wax paper and place them into a freezer bag. Keep them in the freezer for an easy breakfast any day of the week! Simply pop them into the toaster to reheat!

❓ Recipe FAQs

What Is The Difference Between A Waffle And A Belgian Waffle?

Belgian waffles are typically thicker than the standard, American variety. They have deeper pockets (better for holding tasty toppings and fillings) and are generally larger!

How Are Waffles Different Than Pancakes?

Believe it or not, they actually have different batters! Of course, they do share a lot of common ingredients, but there are some differences.

In general, pancakes use more baking powder to help them rise while waffles use more butter and eggs to help them get a crispy outside!

Why Are My Waffles Sticking To The Waffle Iron?

Make sure to give your waffle iron a spritz of non-stick cooking spray before getting started. If your waffle is sticking to the iron, it most likely isn't done cooking yet!
